Rachel Holmes, Head of Literature & Spoken Word, describes what we can expect at the London Literature Festival in this excerpt from Summer for Members:
‘The London Literature Festival is a festival of fun – of words, books and music. It’s very much focused on being a live literature festival; and for two weeks, day and night, inside and outside, we’re going to be having something like a Glastonbury for books in the city. In the way that Glastonbury is very diverse and eclectic, we’ll create that same sort of sense there’s something for everyone – from debates on free speech and environmentalism, right through to comedy (with comedian Josie Long, pictured left), beatbox and spoken word. It will be a combination of tent-filling names, new writers and new voices.’
‘The London Literature Festival is a festival of words, books and music... it’s like a Glastonbury for all forms of literature and spoken word in the city’
‘Major literary awards play a big part in this year’s Festival as well, says Holmes.‘The Caine Prize for African Writing, which Jude Kelly is chairing, is happening here and we’re also hosting Booker 40, where the public will choose their favourite Booker of Bookers to celebrate 40 years of the Booker Prize. We’re also not only announcing the winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize for non-fiction and Biography here, but we are also doing a series of events in conjunction with the Samuel Johnson Prize – and this is the first time they’ve done any public events.’
