Main Festival Performers

1 – 18 July 2010

We present the inaugural Litweeter Festival, an interactive compendium of word play, twittery challenges and literary gossip. Each day of the festival sees a new online event, from creative challenges and comment to scavenger hunts for free festival tickets. Festival authors like Slavoj Zizek and Ben Goldacre will be taking over our twitter for conversation and debate, and you can win great prizes by contributing your own creative twitterings.

Co-curated by Nikesh Shukla and Southbank Centre, there will be two tweet ups during the festival, on Wednesday 7th July and Sunday 18th July.

Monday 12th July

WORDPLAY Judged by Poet and Southbank Centre Artist in Residence Lemn Sissay we’re running the first London Literature Festival haiku competiton, tweet yours adding #LLFhaiku, the winner will receive 2 tickets to Orange Prize winner Barbara Kingsolver’s event at the festival and a selection of books.


Tuesday 13th July

TAKEOVER Reprieve are a charity that defends the legal rights of prisoners from death row to Guantánamo Bay, Reprieve founder Clive Stafford Smith will be taking over @litweeter to discuss his experiences of 20 years defending prisoners facing the death sentence.


Wednesday 14th July

WORDPLAY We’re giving away a copy of Alex Bellos’ new book ‘Futebol: The Brazilian Way of Life’ in return for you cheesiest book puns, if you can beat ‘The Un-Gruyerable Lightness of Brieing’ and name a better #bookcheese a copy of Alex’s book is yours!


Thursday 15th July

WORDPLAY #5wordclassics summarize a classic book in just 5 words to win a selection of classics in the making from festival authors.


Friday 16th July

TAKEOVER Picked by Granta as one of the top 20 young British novelists, two time Booker nominated author Andrew O’Hagan takes over @litweeter ahead of the launch of his new novel The Life and Opinions of Maf the Dog and of His Friend Marilyn Monroe at the festival on Sunday.


Saturday 17th July

WORDPLAY We’ve two tickets to give away to Brazilian Tropicália music legends Os Mutantes at Royal Festival in exchange for your very best #LLFbookbands ‘Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone Roses’ or ‘Black Grapes of Wrath’ to beat!

Sunday 18th July

TAKEOVER Our team of young creators in residence take over our feed in the run up to Storybox Live a multimedia event on the final day the festival, showcasing literature, sound and visual art the team have collected through their interviews and conversations with the festival's artists and audience.
