On the 40th anniversary of The Hayward, Zaha Hadid, Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor and Dennis Compton, one of the gallery’s original architects, join a distinguished group of artists and architects in a discussion that takes The Hayward as starting point. The debate focuses on different, but often concurrent approaches to designing gallery architecture: the great modernist tradition of building-as-machine and idea of gallery as sculptural icon. How do particular artists develop installation strategies that directly respond to a building’s plan?
